Product Review: How Does The Outdoor Edge Game Processing Kit Stack Up?

I was excited to get the opportunity to use my new Outdoor Edge Game Processing Kit this year. I’ve wanted to try out some new knives and processing tools in hopes of finding a kit that would remove the need for me to drive to the nearest deer processor as soon as I had a Whitetail on the ground.

I got my chance to test drive these new tools this month when I bagged a Whitetail buck in central Texas.

I knew that Outdoor Edge had a reputation for coming out of the box with a razor sharp edge, so to compare it to the sharpest object I could find, I brought along a popular skinning knife that uses disposable autopsy blades. To say that these scalpel blades are sharp is an understatement.

I began field dressing my deer with the autopsy scalpel to get a feel for how smoothly a scalpel can work. I didn’t think any knife could feel as sharp and cut as smoothly, but I was wrong. The moment I switched to the Outdoor Edge skinning knife, I felt the same smooth, effortless cutting that the scalpel was giving me. In fact, with the larger grip on the Outdoor Edge knives it was actually more comfortable to manipulate.

After quartering my deer and returning home I set out to test the other tools, particularly the boning knife and bone saw. Once again the trimming and de-boning process was a piece of cake. The size and sharpness of the Outdoor Edge boning knife was just as perfect as the skinning knife. The bone saw still requires you to put your back into the job – It is a manual saw of course – but it did the trick with less effort than I expected. I’d still like to keep a powered saw around for those jobs whenever possible, but if I had to rely on a manual saw, the Outdoor Edge Kit will work just fine.

The kit also comes with a knife sharpener that is completely idiot proof – you just slide your blade through the sharpener a few times to get that killer edge back. I tried this tool on one of my older kitchen knives and was thrilled to smoothly slice through tomatoes and meat after only pulling the knife through the sharpener four times.

This kit will be in my hunting pack for a long time. The functionality and sharpness of each blade, combined with the easy-to-carry case make it a perfect addition to any hunters gear pack.
